Boy with cancer turns into a superhero for a day
Thursday was shaping up to be just another school day for 13-year-old Erik Martin, but then something extraordinary happened: Spider-Man called.
Spider-Man happens to be one of the few people who knows that Erik, too, has a secret identity — he’s Electron Boy, a superhero who fights the powers of evil with light.
And Spider-Man needed Erik’s help.
Erik, who is living with liver cancer, has always wanted to be a superhero. On Thursday, the regional chapter of the Make-A-Wish Foundation granted him that wish with an elaborate event that involved hundreds of volunteers in Bellevue and Seattle.
The local chapter, which serves four states, grants more than 300 wishes every year to children with life-threatening medical conditions, but only a few of them involve so many participants.
Pulling off a wish like this one required a big story, and a lot of heart. And so, with a note of panic in his voice, Spider-Man explained the dilemma: “Dr. Dark” and “Blackout Boy” had imprisoned the Seattle Sounders in a locker room at Qwest Field. Only Electron Boy could free them.
Erik got into his red-and-blue superhero costume, and called on the powers of Moonshine Maid, who owns a DeLorean sports car. For good measure, more than 20 motorcycle officers from the Bellevue Police Department and King County and Snohomish sheriff’s offices escorted Electron Boy to Seattle.
Prisonage Break
How odd. I just awoke from a weird dream in which I was imprisoned in a solid cell with two other really whiny peeps. We managed to incapacitate three high-ranking guards when they entered our cell. Urhm. Somehow.
If fact, them guards strongly resembled some highschool classmates. Hmm.
Anyway. So I remember pulling the one guard over to the bed to put him in but one of our fellow inmates, refusing to help out, started bitching about us not being friends and being a really ponce. This escape would have have gone a lot smoother if, despite our differences, we could at least be on the same page. Fortunately for the inmate I’d more pressing matters to attend to then punching his whiney ass out.
I got into the guard’s clothes and had to figure a way to hide the extra marking denoting rank. Obviously I’d fit in better at a lower rank. Seems I was making too big a deal of this. Blurry bit as I escaped the prison and wound up at the guard’s home, which seemed to be, now that I think on it, still within the prison complex.
Lucky it would seem that his wife (or girlfriend or whatever) was so short-sighted, she didn’t even realise that I wasn’t the man I was pretending to be. Yah, there’s much to be said about that relationship!
I haven’t had very clear cut dreams in a long time. To have an odd one like this and remember the vast majority is probably evidence of my subconscious highlighting something of importance. Too bad for it, I never pay nearly enough attention. Pleh :-P
